New Research Program in Depression Unveiled
The University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) associated with the Royal Ottawa Hospital announced the creation of the Institute’s Endowed Chair in Mood Disorders Research to be headed by Dr. Pierre Blier. Dr. Blier, a world-renowned clinical scientist in depression, moved from the United States to take the Chair position and to lead this innovative clinical, research and teaching program in the field of depression. As chair, Dr. Blier plans further research in “rapid treatment” studies—making patients better faster. Dr. Blier has led depression research worldwide with his theory that all types of anti-depression medication share a common mechanism of action that acts on serotonin neurotransmission signals in the brain. The research chair was announced in February by Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable James K. Bartleman, who also agreed to act as patron of the IMHR. HC
