Call for NominationsAnnual Canadian Psychiatric Association AwardsThe CPA J.M. Cleghorn Award for Excellence and Leadership in Clinical Research This award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. John Cleghorn, an early neuroendocrine researcher who established the Tapscot Chair. He was also the first chair of the scientific and research standing committee, originally called the scientific council. The award recognizes a CPA member for demonstrating excellence in clinical psychiatric research or leadership in advancing clinical psychiatric research in Canada. The CPA Paul Patterson Award for Education LeadershipThis award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Paul Patterson, who was a child and adolescent specialist with strong interests in the education of the general psychiatrist. He practiced and mentored community-based care and was an early advocate of reciprocal education and practice at the family medicine-psychiatry interface. He led and contributed to a broad range of educational initiatives at the CPA with wisdom, creativity and a warm, gentle sense of humour. The award is presented annually to a psychiatric educator who, in responding to change or leading in new directions, makes a significant contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing professional education or public education. Note: This award is not to conflict with the Association of Chairs of Psychiatry of Canada (ACPC) Award for excellence in education given annually to an individual who has made a significant and sustained contribution to psychiatric education. Roberts Award for Clinical LeadershipThis award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. C.A. Roberts and is presented annually to a psychiatrist-clinician who has made a significant contribution to the improvement of patient care. The award was established to recognize outstanding CPA member clinicians who have been instrumental in the development of new treatment approaches, creative program design, or administrative innovations or who have been recognized as consistently providing superior quality psychiatric care to patients. Mental Illness Awareness Special Recognition AwardThis honorary award is presented in recognition of outstanding leadership and dedication to the promotion of mental illness awareness. Nomination Criteria1. Nominees can be any person who has shown outstanding leadership and dedication to the promotion of mental illness awareness; nominees do not have to be members of the CPA. 2. Nominees must be endorsed by at least one person from an organization that is familiar with the nominees’ work, by means of a letter identifying the reason for the nomination. 3. Two or three endorsement letters are preferable. 4. Letters must be no longer than 300 words. 5. Additional information about the nominee or the programs that the nominee has been involved with may be included with the application. 6. Nominations must be received no later than June 30, 2003. Criteria for submitting nominations for the CPA Cleghorn, Patterson and Roberts Awards1. The nominee must be a member in good standing of CPA. 2. The nomination must include a statement by the nominator (no more than 500 words) concerning the merit of the individual’s contribution and must be accompanied by supporting documentation illustrating or describing the individual’s contribution. 3. Send nominations to: Canadian Psychiatric Association Awards, Collaborative AwardsJoint CPA-COPCE Awards for the most outstanding continuing education activity in psychiatry in CanadaThese awards recognize individuals or groups responsible for excellence in the planning, delivery and evaluation of a continuing education (CE) activity in psychiatry in Canada and are jointly sponsored by the Council of Psychiatric Continuing Education (COPCE) and the CPA for CE planners who work in a community, rural or medical school setting. Eligible Activities1. Held between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2002. A letter of nomination can be submitted by the physician CE planner(s) or by a department head or hospital chief. Alex Leighton joint CPA-CAPE Award for Psychiatric EpidemiologyThe Alex Leighton Award was created in September 1998 to honour this leading figure of Canadian psychiatric epidemiology at his 90th anniversary in Halifax. Professor Alex Leighton has been a pioneer and a leader in psychiatric epidemiology in this century. His work has associated innovative scientific endeavours with humanistic values and social concerns. He has also been a great communicator and teacher, training and inspiring generations of psychiatric epidemiologists and scientists. Nomination CriteriaThe Alex Leighton Award is a joint initiative of the CPA and the Canadian Academy of Psychiatric Epidemiology (CAPE). Its purpose is to recognize an individual or a group of individuals that have made a significant contribution to the advancement and diffusion of Canadian psychiatric epidemiology through innovative studies, methods, teaching or transfer of knowledge. It can be related to lifelong activities or to a recent significant achievement by more junior scientists. The work must therefore be easily recognized as:
