Toronto to Host First Arts Festival
Featuring Creativity and Mental Illness
Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre will celebrate creativity and mental health next month when the world arts festival “Madness and Arts 2003" arrives March 21–30.
The first of its kind, the festival will feature several well-known keynote speakers, each with a special understanding of the connections between creativity and mental illness. This inaugural festival will include an international art show, a lecture series, seminars, hands-on workshops and panel discussions. It will showcase more than 100 artists from around the world, including actors, dancers, musicians, painters and writers. They all share a common theme: their work explores mental health issues.
“‘Madness and Arts’ is a unique opportunity for people to see wonderfully talented artists and to learn more about an issue that is seldom in the public eye,” said Lisa Brown, founder of the Workman Theatre and one of the festival originators. The festival is being presented by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Workman Theatre Project of Ontario, an arts company that brings together people who have experienced mental illness and Toronto arts professionals.
