This multiauthored review of contemporary psychoanalysis includes all current theoretical orientations. It offers a clearly written, user-friendly, and broadly comprehensive view of all issues in psychoanalysis. These areas include theories, treatment, developmental issues, research, and the intersection with other disciplines. There is some attention to history and to the presence of psychoanalysis in different parts of the world.
The book is easy to understand, which is not always true of books from this discipline. The authors demonstrate that pluralism of theory and techniques now exists. One of the frequent criticisms of psychoanalysis is the nontestable nature of its early theories. Some of the research findings from attachment theory and attachment and infant observation, which influence many contemporary analysts, are emphasized in the book.
The authors and editors are all well published, and many are most accomplished teachers in psychoanalysis. Although the book is long, each chapter is brief and to the point. The layout is attractive, and there are no obvious errors. The price is quite fair for a text of this size and quality. It is a worthwhile reference book for contemporary psychoanalysis. The chapters on research are especially well done and provide information that is not widely known, especially to the noisier critics in the field.
