How to Become a CPA Member

Membership in the Canadian Psychiatric Association is open to healthcare professionals. There are several different membership categories: Active, Member-in-Training, Medical Student, Associate, Affiliate, International, Life and Honorary.




Active Members

Qualified medical practitioners who are licensed to practice in any Canadian province and who are certified in psychiatry by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or by a provincial college, or hold such other specialist qualifications in psychiatry as recognized by the CPA. A photocopy or other official verification of licensure and certification in psychiatry must be submitted with application form.

  • Annual fee: $368.52 (GST included) or $396.33 (HST included where applicable)*.

  • Spouses: Where both are Active members, one spouse shall pay an annual fee of $316.02 (GST included) or $339.87 (HST included where applicable)

  • Early Career Psychiatrists: Graded-fees for first two years following certification in psychiatry:

    o first year: $83.21 (GST included) or $89.49 (HST included where applicable);*
    o second year: $166.43 (GST included) or $178.99 (HST included where applicable);*
    o regular Active membership fee applies in third year.

Members-in-Training (MIT)

Physicians who are registered in an approved post-graduate training program in psychiatry. Applicant must submit written verification of enrollment in a psychiatry program along with confirmation of his/her post-graduate year (PGY1-5 or R1-5 in Quebec), with application form.

Members-in-training who go on to further fellowship training, may extend their member-in-training status upon application and providing documentation of being enrolled in such a training program.

  • Canadian residents pay $27.74 (GST included) or $29.83 (HST included) where applicable*.

  • Foreign residents pay $105.00 (Canadian dollars).

Medical Students

Students who are currently enrolled in an approved training program in medicine. Written confirmation from the faculty of medicine where the applicant is enrolled, with expected graduation date, must accompany application form.

  • Student membership is complimentary, but includes on-line access to CPA publications only (no hard copy).

Associate Members

Medical practitioners who are qualified to practice in any Canadian province and who are interested in the aims and objectives of the association. Applicant must submit appropriate written verification of licensure with application form.

  • Annual fee: $122.84 (GST included) or $132.11 (HST included where applicable)*.

Affiliate Members

Individuals who are members of a professional group involved in the provision of psychiatric services or the promotion of mental health and who are properly qualified in their profession, as recognized by the CPA. Applicant must submit a photocopy of license/permission to practice in his/her particular profession with application form.

  • Annual fee: $122.84 (GST included) or $132.11 (HST included where applicable)*.

International Members

  • · Physicians who are qualified to practice psychiatry and who permanently reside outside of Canada. Applicant must submit written proof, in English, of licensure and specialist qualifications in psychiatry.

  • Annual fee: $175.00 (Canadian dollars; GST not applicable).

Life Members

Members who have reached the age of 65 and who have been Active Members in good standing for 30 consecutive years. MIT years are not included in these 30 consecutive years.

Honorary Members

Physicians who have achieved pre-eminence in their profession whom the Membership Affairs Committee or CPA Board of Directors wishes to recognize.

Want to Apply to be a CPA Member?

Apply to be a member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association by filling out, printing and submitting a Membership Application Form with payment. Payment can be made by VISA, Mastercard, cheque or money order. Foreign applicants should forward a money order in Canadian currency or a cheque for the equivalent amount in U.S. funds.
