Funding Priorities
Current Focus Groups and Priorities
While the need to support the profession encompasses a field that is both widespread and growing in complexity, the Foundation has determined to focus on three critical groups and priorities.
Current Priority Groups
Resident and Early Career Psychiatrists
Canadian psychiatrists who are finishing or have just finished postgraduate training in psychiatry represent the future of psychiatry in Canada. The Foundation recognizes and supports their efforts to develop innovative evidence-based best practices in order to better serve their patients and all Canadians.
Rural and Isolated Areas
Canadian psychiatrists who are working in or who directly support rural communities and isolated areas are another area of focus for FCPA. The Foundation encourages this important group to share their best practices and develop new and innovative ways of bringing their services to vast areas of Canada.
Private Practitioners and Community Psychiatrists.
Providing opportunities for Canadian psychiatrists operating in a private practice or within a community setting and who are reimbursed directly by OHIP, MSI or the equivalent thereof in other provinces, is also an important area for FCPA. The Foundation recognizes that some of the best care is delivered by this segment of the psychiatric community and encourages them to advance the profession by sharing and delivering long term successes through documented efforts and collaborative projects.
Current Funding Priorities
Children and Mental Health
Since the onset of most mental illnesses occurs during adolescence and young adulthood, this is a primary focus for the Foundation.
Innovations in Psychiatry
Innovative projects that provide pragmatic approaches towards better psychiatric care, especially for under funded or under serviced groups such as seniors, Aboriginal People, youth and the homeless, is a major focus for the Foundation.
Independent Projects not funded by drug companies
The Foundation generally supports projects that are not tied to areas where companies have a therapeutic interest.
